I’ll be over here in the copper armour
March 12th, 2008 Posted 10:02 am
Yesterday was a Very Bad Day. I was intending to go to Birmingham for a meeting with the rest of theDiscworld Convention’s programme team but in the end, couldn’t. The first spanner in the works was when I went out to my car to take Scarlett to nursery and discovered that some idiot had hit the passenger side rear wing - shattering the light casing, putting a dent in the bodywork, cracking the light fitting and scraping a fair but of paint off.
Fortunately the lights were still working (I had to reattach the red cover for the break light) so I took her to nursery. Got home, was just getting ready to leave for Birmingham when the nursery rang me; Scarlett had been sick twice. So I spent yesterday with Scarlett who made some kind of miraculous recovery and proceeded to trash my nice tidy house. The flat now smells funny, a cross between unwashed child and nappies. Which is odd because I bathed her and all the nappies are in the outside bin. Maybe I’m imagining it.
I’m still waiting for item number three, unless that’s what the smell it.

Three Hours Later
November 25th, 2007 Posted 5:19 pm
I’m still in an online committee meeting. And I’ve been awake for over 24 hours. It’s a good meeting though, and nice to catch up with people. But damn I’m tired.

Organisation Rediscovered
November 25th, 2007 Posted 6:32 am
I appear to have rediscovered my old organised, productive pre-Scarlett self. I didn’t want to say anything too soon in case I jinxed it but then when I was tagging all my old posts, I realised that far too many of them are filled with worry over my procrastinating ways and I thought it might do me good to focus on the positive. So I am:
- University is going well. I’m currently acheiving a very solid First and though it’s early days, there’s not many other people managing it so it’s something to be proud of especially with the current workload. Of course, now I’ve got a website, an event budget, a presentation, a PR plan, market research pilot study, an outdoor event plan and an updated portfolio all due within the next two weeks. I’m on it.
- Scarlett is still the best baby ever. She’s a little angel, everyone adores her, she’s super well-behaved, has progressed to talking in sentences (mostly “Where are you? I am here.” and “In the Night Garden.” and “Can I have milk….than-q.”) and I’ll stop now.
- Conventions are mostly in line. I’ve got an online committee meeting for Discworld Con 2008 later today (and I haven’t been to bed yet, oh well), a whole lot of planning to do for LX 2009 (I don’t know why I don’t just stick it all in a Project Manager, for some reason I feel like I shouldn’t use project management software for SF cons and then it all takes three times as long as it should), a possible proposal to produce for a conference and a couple of bits for an as-yet-unannounced con in 2009.
So that’s me being positive. It feels good.

Novacon 37
November 4th, 2007 Posted 11:45 pm
I have returned from a day at Novacon although it was actually more like an afternoon. I left with plenty of time so I wouldn’t be late for the LX committee meeting only to miss my first turning and fail to notice until I was halfway to Manchester. That was my headstart gone but fortunately I made it in good time and, for the first time ever, wasn’t late.
I can’t really review the con since the only panel item I went to was the one I was on (talking about the past and future of science-fiction conventions, that’s a whole other post that I’m too knackered to write tonight) but it was nice to see some familiar faces and made me even more torn about only going to half of Orbital (Neil Gaiman!!!!). It was fun, I’ll go again next year and now, back to the university work. Hopefully for the last time.
