So, I’m a Slowpoke
April 19th, 2007 Posted 5:15 pm
In the past 7 days I have achieved not one of the things I set out to do. I haven’t even tidied my desk which I’ve actually been saying I need to do for over a month. I haven’t finished any essays, articles or stories. I haven’t even started compiling my to-do list for the conventions I’m involved in nor have I done the evaluation of the one that’s just been. I’ve not collected my mail. I haven’t cleaned the house. I haven’t made a list of all my outgoings and incomings in preparation for the arrival of some desperately needed cash on Monday.
But I have installed WordPress, ordered a layout for it and begun making notes for future posts. Again. I’ve also decided what camera I’ll be buying (Sony CyberShot DSC-T100) to replace the one that my ex took (Canon EOS 20D) when we split up. And I’ve got Post-It notes all over the place with ideas for a couple of new websites I’m working on.
The level of my procrastination is so extreme that I spent half an hour today looking up different definitions of the word, ‘procrastinate’. Part of me was hoping I’d find my picture with one of them. But I think I’m going to have to stop referring to it as procrastination, the word’s far too nice and has an associated coolness that practically encourages me to do nothing. No, what I’ve been doing is wasting time. Lots of it.
I need a life style change.
What I need to do, and I’ve known this for the best part of a year, is start eating properly, doing more exercise, tidying up as I go along and actually getting some work done. Consistently. Not just for the duration of reading Getting Things Done (which I’m only half way through and haven’t even picked up in a month – which is no reflection on the book, whilst I was reading it I became hyper-organised, sadly you can’t read all the time). I’m not quite sure how I intend to achieve this but things have pretty much reached breaking point. If I don’t get my finger out, I’ll be skint, unemployed and won’t have a university course to go to. The time has come to be a grown-up. Holy shit.
